Mole Evaluation

Mole Evaluation & Monitoring: When to Get Your Moles Checked

Most of us have moles—those small brown spots that are usually nothing to worry about. But how do you know when a mole needs professional attention? Understanding the difference between harmless moles and potentially problematic ones could literally save your life.

Why Mole Monitoring Matters

Some moles (also known as nevi) are completely harmless and will remain unchanged throughout your lifetime. Others, however, can potentially develop into skin cancer, particularly melanoma—the most dangerous form. If you have a new mole or notice changes in an existing mole, it should be evaluated by an experienced dermatology provider as soon as possible.

The Warning Signs: What to Look For

At DermCARE Practitioners in Louisville, we evaluate moles for concerning changes using the ABCDE criteria:

Asymmetry – One half of the mole doesn’t match the other half in shape or color

Border Irregularities – Poorly defined, jagged, or blurred edges

Color Variations – Multiple colors or uneven color distribution within the same mole

Diameter – Larger than a pencil eraser (about 6mm), though melanomas can be smaller

Evolution – Any changes over time in size, shape, color, or symptoms

The “Ugly Duckling” Sign – Any mole that looks noticeably different from your other moles
